Mercedes recently relaunched its S-Class and the new 7-series BMW is coming next summer. Time for a revision of the Audi A8. However, not much happens with the facelift; apart from a particularly exclusive Chinese variant called A8 Horch. This XXL version is left out in Europe.

Before the Second World War, Horch was probably the most exclusive car brand that could be driven in Europe. After the war, the brand was lost and ultimately became part of Auto Union and thus into Audi. Because the Ingolstadt-based company needs a luxury competitor for Maybach and the most exclusive BMW models, the traditional brand name was removed as a model name and revived with the Audi A8. But apart from the new China variant with more luxury and even more wheelbase, the revised Audi A8 does not have much to offer that is really new. There are new LED headlights and a modified radiator grille – small changes to survive against the strong German competition for a few years, which also shine with electric versions that are already available with the EQS or are still to come with the BMW i7.

The Audi A8 Horch, which is 13 centimeters longer than the Audi A8 L to 5.45 meters in the main market of China, is likely to be easier. It offers additional luxury in the interior with exclusive leather seats with diamond quilting, embossed logo on the rest cushions and deep-pile floor mats in the rear. In addition to the increased length, the A8 Horch offers a special radiator grille with vertical struts and chrome applications on the body details as well as a Horch badge on the C-pillar, a specific light signature on the rear, enlarged panoramic roof and an even more luxurious relaxation seat in the rear.

The new LED headlights themselves, which all models offer, are real high-tech projectors. Each of them has 1.3 million micromirrors that break down the light into the tiniest pixels and thereby allow it to be controlled in a filigree manner. This enables, among other things, a lane and orientation light for motorways. The headlights emit a carpet of light here, which illuminates your own lane particularly brightly, which is intended to help with orientation, especially on construction sites. When unlocking and leaving the car, the digital projectors can also generate various coming home / leaving home functions.

The technical highlight of the revised Audi A8 is its predictive active suspension, which can load or relieve each wheel with additional power from sporty to very comfortable via an electric motor and thus regulate the position of the body in every driving situation. In addition to the elegant design, the luxurious and comfortable interior remains the great strength of the Audi A8. The top equipment with a long wheelbase includes a reclining seat with numerous adjustment options and a footrest on the back of the front passenger seat. Here, passengers can have the soles of their feet warmed and massaged in several stages. The reclining seat package includes a back massage with 18 pneumatic cushions, electrically adjustable comfort headrests, on request a central console with folding tables, four-zone comfort automatic air conditioning and the new screens in the rear. A cool box including a bar compartment provides chilled drinks. While chilled drinks are being sipped, passengers in the rear can be entertained on new 10.1-inch displays with HD resolution that are attached to the backrests of the front seats.

With the drives, everything stays the same and so the models – optionally with a long or normal wheelbase – have an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The basic engine is the Audi A8 TFSI 55 Quattro with 250 kW / 340 PS / 500 Nm, which consumes 8.1 liters of Super over 100 kilometers. There is a weaker version with 286 hp especially for the Chinese market. Much more interesting for many brands is the turbocharged V8 petrol engine, whose four-liter engine produces 338 kW / 460 PS / 660 Nm. It accelerates from a standstill to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds and has a standard consumption of 10.7 liters of super per 100 kilometers. The three-liter diesel with 286 hp and the popular plug-in hybrid, whose three-liter V6 with electric assistance produces around 450 hp, also remain in the range. The top model remains the 420 kW / 571 hp Audi S8 with a maximum torque of 800 Nm. Market launch for the new Audi A8 in December. The base price of the A8 55 TFSI Quattro is 99,500 euros; the top version S8 costs at least 144,800 euros.
