At the start of “Arielle: Disney’s live-action adaptations to date

“The Little Mermaid” continues the long line of Disney remakes of popular cartoon classics. An overview.

On May 25, “Arielle, the Mermaid”, another live-action remake of a popular Disney classic cartoon, will be released in German cinemas. Young actress Halle Bailey (23) plays the title character, while popular comedian Melissa McCarthy (52) embodies sea witch Ursula.

However, Little Mermaid is by no means the first live-action remake of a beloved Disney classic. An overview of the long line of Disney remakes in recent years.

“Alice in Wonderland” (2010)

The mouse house got a taste for remake in 2010 when Tim Burton’s (64) visually stunning 3D film “Alice in Wonderland” was released in cinemas. The live-action adaptation of the Disney classic of the same name from 1951 brought in the unbelievable sum of over one billion US dollars at the worldwide box office – and probably showed Disney impressively the financial potential of live-action new adaptations of famous predecessors slumbers.

The main role of Alice was played by young actress Mia Wasikowska (33). Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter also co-starred. For the sequel “Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking-Glass” all the actors mentioned returned in 2016.

“Maleficent – The Dark Fairy” (2014)

Next, the Disney classic “Sleeping Beauty” (1959) received a contemporary update. Superstar Angelina Jolie (47) was cleverly cast as the title character Maleficent, who was called Maleficent in the 1959 film. “Maleficent” is mainly told from her point of view and grossed over 750 million dollars worldwide, but was not particularly convincing to international film critics.

A sequel followed in 2019 with “Maleficent: Forces of Darkness”, for which Jolie and Princess Aurora actress Elle Fanning (25) returned.

“Cinderella” (2015)

The live-action remake of “Cinderella” and “Aschenputtel” (1950), which was released in 2015, was much better received by the cinema critics. Leading actress Lily James (34) convinced as the title character, “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter took on other roles under the direction of Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh (62).

Viewers rewarded it with box office earnings of over 540 million US dollars.

“The Jungle Book” (2016)

Then in 2016, the popular Disney classic ‘The Jungle Book’ (1967) received a live-action remake with the German title ‘The Jungle Book’. Marvel and “Star Wars” director Jon Favreau (56) combined live-action footage with computer animation for his remake, setting new technical standards.

“The Jungle Book” received unanimous critical acclaim and grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office.

“Beauty and the Beast” (2017)

Again under a German title, director Bill Condon (67) staged the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast” from 1991 again in 2017. “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson (33) embodied Belle in the popular film, and the beautiful film songs from the musical in particular caused storms of enthusiasm among viewers.

With worldwide box office earnings of over 1.25 billion US dollars, “Beauty and the Beast” is also financially the most successful Disney remake of a popular animated classic.

Christopher Robin (2018)

One of the more imaginative Disney remakes is clearly “Christopher Robin” from 2018. Directed by German-Swiss director Marc Forster (54), Ewan McGregor (52) plays the title character who has come of age and who has a surprising visit from his old childhood friend in London Winnie the Pooh receives.

The live-action adaptation with animated elements grossed almost 200 million US dollars at the box office.

“Dumbo” (2019)

In 2019, “Alice in Wonderland” director Tim Burton brought the floppy-eared, flying elephant “Dumbo” to the big screen again. Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green took on the human roles, while the title character was, of course, computer based.

“Dumbo” didn’t meet with much approval from the film critics, and the box office was also disappointing by Disney standards at just over 350 million US dollars.

“Aladdin” (2019)

Guy Ritchie’s (54) “Aladdin” remake of 2019 with Will Smith (54) as Genie did not cause any storms of enthusiasm and is considered by many to be a mediocre remake of the 1992 original.

Financially, however, the film was a hit for Disney, grossing over $1 billion.

“Lady and the Tramp” (2019)

Another hugely popular 1955 Disney classic received a live-action remake in 2019. “Lady and the Strolch” was released on the new mouse streaming service right at the launch of Disney+ on November 12 and, according to the unanimous opinion of critics, did not quite match its unforgettable original. The lovable remake is definitely recommended.

“Mulan” (2020)

The remake of “Mulan” (1998) was supposed to be released in cinemas in early 2020, but the corona pandemic thwarted Disney’s plans. This is how the work of director Niki Caro (56) landed – initially for a premium fee – on the Disney + streaming service

With particularly spectacular visual values, the live-action remake met with universal approval from the audience – even if the dragon Mushu was sorely missed by some viewers.

Cruella (2021)

With “Cruella” Disney brought a real critic’s favorite to the cinemas in 2021. Oscar winner Emma Stone (34) shines as Disney villain Cruella de Vil from the classic film “101 Dalmatians” (1961), who had already received a live-action update in 1996 with Glenn Close (76) as Cruella.

The 2021 film, which garnered critical acclaim for its costumes, grossed over $230 million at the global box office.

“Pinocchio” (2022)

Not long ago was the Disney remake of “Pinocchio” with Tom Hanks (66) as Master Geppetto. The film by “Back to the Future” director Robert Zemeckis (71) landed directly on the Disney + streaming service in September 2022 – and was torn apart by global film criticism.

The underground special effects were particularly criticized, while many observers attested Tom Hanks the worst performance of his entire career.

Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)

Also on Disney in April 2023, Peter Pan & Wendy, a live-action adaptation of the 1953 animated film Peter Pan, will be directed by indie filmmaker David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Green Knight). the young actors Alexander Molony (16) and Ever Anderson (15) in the title roles. Jude Law (50) embodies Captain Hook.
