At least 13 people were injured in a gunshot in a New York subway station, police said. The perpetrator is possibly on the run.
Several people were shot at a subway station in the Brooklyn borough of New York. Firefighters drove to the station after reports of smoke and found several people shot, a spokesman for the New York Fire Department said. At least 13 people were injured in the incident. It was initially unclear how many of them were shot, US media reported five people injured by bullets.
A photo from the scene showed people caring for blood-smeared passengers. The injured lay on the subway station floor. Further details were not initially known.

Shots were fired in rush hour
The shots were fired in the morning rush hour, it was reported ARD correspondent Peter Mücke. The emergency services were alerted around 8:30 a.m. local time. The subway station is south of Manhattan in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, a poorer neighborhood in the city, Mücke said.
Several subway lines meet at the station, the trains of which stopped at the stations. There were numerous delays and cancellations.
Police give the all-clear: No active explosive devices
Footage posted on social media showed smoke appearing to be coming from a subway car. Police said a smoke grenade was detonated before the shots were fired. However, contrary to what was initially reported, explosive devices were not found, the New York police said on Twitter. She also urged people to avoid the area around the station.
Perpetrators possibly on the run
Investigators are looking for a person wearing a gas mask and an orange work vest. Brooklyn Borough Mayor Mark Levine wrote on Twitter that the suspected shooter was still at large.
US President Biden informed
US President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting, his spokeswoman said. Senior White House officials are in contact with New York Mayor Eric Adams and the police leadership. If necessary, the government is ready to give the city all the help it needs.
