In view of the lack of school staff, the Bavarian Teachers’ Association (BLLV) has advocated lowering the expectations placed on teachers in the current school year. Not all of these could currently meet the demands placed on them, said association president Simone Fleischmann on Wednesday at a press conference in Munich. There are problems, especially in elementary, middle and special schools.
For these three types of school alone, the BLLV assumes that there are currently a good 1,500 missing full-time capacities. He therefore proposes a series of short-term measures, some of which are in line with the state government’s recent education policy announcements and others that go beyond them. For example, the association supports the creation of more administrative offices in order to free teachers from time-consuming additional activities. On the other hand, he classifies the plan of Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) to poach teachers in other federal states as unrealistic. “Anyone who wants to can come now,” said Vice President Gerd Nitschke. However, qualifications from other federal states are not always recognized in Bavaria – while as an Austrian it is possible to teach in this country thanks to the freedom of movement in the EU.
