Veronique Kouchev took everything literally from an early age. At 17 she was diagnosed with Asperger’s autism. Veronique was relieved: she finally knew what was wrong with her.
Even as a child I felt that I was different. My parents separated when I was four. That’s when I remember the first problems with other children. I took everything literally – and they took advantage of that. The Lego corner was popular in kindergarten. The other children encouraged me: “Get the other child out of there, then we can play together.” I did that and as punishment I sat on the bench and wasn’t allowed to play.
