Artificial intelligence and its dirty secrets

Artificial intelligence can make our lives easier, but it uses huge amounts of electricity – and that often comes from fossil power plants.

Microsoft recently sent a surprising message to the world: The US company wants to restart an old nuclear power plant in order to cover the enormous power requirements for artificial intelligence (AI). It’s about reactor 1 at Three Mile Island in the US state of Pennsylvania, whose operations were stopped in 2019 due to economic difficulties. Microsoft describes the revival of the power plant as a contribution to its climate promise and, in short, classifies nuclear power as green energy.
