Huge masses of water, waves as high as walls, blue whirlpools and white spray, and then this quote from the original by Hans Christian Andersen: “But mermaids have no tears and therefore suffer much more.” The very first shots of Rob Marshall’s animated remake could be read as an announcement of something deep, sad, grand. About a new, melancholic interpretation of the “Little Mermaid”, in which the sea is dark and longing is great. A film that could be closer to Andersen’s story than to the colorful spectacle with the musical catchy tunes with which Disney turned the decline of its animation film division into a roaring global success in 1989.
