Are Lyon pedestrians more dangerous than others?

Are Lyon pedestrians more reckless than others? This is the feeling that emerges from a study published on Monday by the MMA insurance group which looked at the mobility of pedestrians in urban areas. Five cities were scrutinized: Paris, Lille, Nantes, Montpellier and Lyon. Verdict: 38% of Lyonnais “have a risky behavior while crossing”. A higher figure than in other cities. In the details, the reality is sometimes more surprising.

The study carried out in five different places in the city where an accident involving a pedestrian has occurred in recent years (cours Lafayette, boulevard des Etats-Unis, avenue Jean-Jaurès, rue Garibaldi and avenue Berthelot), reveals that 83% of people systematically cross at a red light. That is to say nearly 20 points more than at the national level (61%) and 30% outside protected passages while 11% use their mobile phone. In Paris and Lille, by way of comparison, the statistics on this last point are much higher.

Rare are the incidents

Incidents, on the other hand, remain rare: 4% of motorists are forced to brake suddenly or honk the carelessly. Accidents are even rarer.

“In Nantes and even more in Lille, users seem to better respect the instructions for crossing with 33% and 22% respectively having had an unsuitable attitude”, summarizes the insurance group. Montpellier is in the middle and Paris at the same level as Lyon even if the “incidents” observed in the capital are higher than between Rhône and Saône (13%).
