ARD summer interview: Söder accuses Scholz of “inheritance sneaking”

One month before the general election, the Union continues to struggle with poor poll numbers. CSU boss Markus Söder demands that important issues must finally be discussed in the election campaign. Instead of Corona, the climate or Afghanistan, innumerable small points are discussed and minor issues are disputed, Söder criticized in the ARD summer interview.

In the federal election the question will be whether there will be a “left slide” or a bourgeois government. SPD Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz gives the appearance of being the successor to Angela Merkel, he is trying to come to power with unfair methods. That was “a kind of inheritance stealth”, criticized Söder.

He reiterated his support for the Union’s candidate for chancellor, Armin Laschet (CDU). He rejected the accusation that he praised and supported the Union candidates too little in the election campaign. According to Söder, he is “100 percent” behind Laschet.

The CSU boss admitted that the Union would have to “bake smaller rolls” in view of the polls. He thinks a turnaround towards a strong union is still possible: “Everything is possible.” The next four weeks will be about campaigning.

In view of the dramatic situation in Afghanistan, Söder spoke out in favor of helping the Afghans wherever possible. Refugees should be accepted in Germany, but “the mistake of 2015” should not be made.
