ARD-DeutschlandTrend: Majority sees need for action in climate protection

Status: 07/22/2021 11:55 p.m.

81 percent of Germans see a very large or large need for action on climate protection – across age and party boundaries. This shows the current one GermanyTrend. There are only minor changes to the Sunday question.

A clear majority of Germans currently see a very large (38 percent) or large (43 percent) need for action on climate protection. That is a result of the current one GermanyTrends for the ARD morning magazine.

This assessment is shared by all age groups – in both East and West Germany. The consensus also extends across party lines: supporters of all parties with the exception of the AfD see at least a great need for climate policy action. On the other hand, only the supporters of the Greens with 80 percent and – somewhat less often – the supporters of the left (58 percent) see a very great need for action.

Climate protection is currently just as important to the respondents as it was in October 2019. At this point in time, shortly after the federal government’s climate package had been adopted, the German citizens estimated the need for action to be just as great as it is now.

CDU, SPD and FDP each gain one percentage point

If the general election were on Sunday, the Union would currently receive 29 percent (plus one percentage point) of the vote. The second strongest force would be the Greens, who lose one percentage point and are currently at 19 percent. The SPD gains one percentage point – 16 percent of those eligible to vote would currently vote for it. The FDP would come to twelve percent (plus one percentage point) and the AfD to ten percent (minus one percentage point). Six percent (minus one percentage point) would vote for the left. An unchanged eight percent of voters would vote for other parties.

Half of the people are interested in the Olympics

The Summer Olympics start in Japan on Friday. In view of the corona pandemic and increasing numbers of infections in the host country, the games will take place without an audience. Nevertheless, there was criticism of the implementation of the major sporting event in advance.

Every second German citizen (48 percent) says they are interested in the games, including 36 percent at least a little, twelve percent very much. A narrow majority of 51 percent, on the other hand, are not interested in the sporting event. Older people are much more interested in the Olympics: 64 percent of those over 65 are very interested in something. Among the 18 to 39 year olds it is only 34 percent.
