13-year-old British woman receives a metal detector and finds an ax and other artifacts from the Bronze Age
A 13-year-old amateur treasure hunter from Suffolk in Great Britain made a spectacular find with the help of her metal detector: she found an ax and other artifacts from the Bronze Age.
Amelia Hardwick from Mildenhall in the English county of Suffolk was very lucky: with the help of her metal detector, the eighth grader found an axthort (a site made up of several objects) from the Bronze Age during her third search. An ax and other artifacts that she and her family dug up there date from 1300 BC. Amelia, who at 13 years of age is significantly younger than most treasure hunters, came across the hobby through her father and evidently proves that she has a very lucky hand.
They found the treasure in a field in Royston
One Sunday in September, Amelia, her father, and her grandfather were out in a field in Royston for several hours looking for treasure with the metal detector. The trio did not find a single object there. After a short lunch break with sandwiches, they looked elsewhere, hoping to be more successful there.
And indeed, after about 20 minutes, what the treasure hunters wanted happened: The alarm sound of Amelia’s metal detector made a high-pitched beep. It is the signal that indicates a possible treasure has been found and probably the most beautiful sound for a treasure hunter. Her father, who had also heard the signal, rushed over immediately and started digging where the device had recently struck. A few minutes later they dug up an ax – and everyone involved was so delighted that they even did a short dance in the field.
The hobby treasure hunters found a total of 65 items
When the trio continued to search the site, they found a complete hoard of artefacts from the Bronze Age. Including various parts of axes and blade fragments made of bronze. In total, Amelia, her grandfather and her father found 65 items at the location. Archaeologists later excavated other objects two meters away from the site. A total of 200 items were excavated in the field. An article about Amelia’s find later appeared in The Searcher Magazine, a magazine for metal detector treasure hunters.
