Apple releases important security update for headphones

Whenever new firmware is released for AirPods, Apple is usually very reserved with information. This is currently different, because the update to version 6A326 or 6F8 closes a security hole in AirPods or Beats brand headphones.

Specifically, the following models are affected: AirPods (2nd generation and newer), AirPods Pro (all models), AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro and Beats Fit Pro. There is no specific way to update the headphones, you should simply pair them and leave them within Bluetooth range, the rest happens automatically.

This is the specific problem

But what exactly is it about? Apple describes the security flaw in a support document as follows: “When the headphones send a connection request to one of the previously paired devices, an attacker within Bluetooth range can spoof the intended source device and gain access to the headphones.”

So just check the iOS settings to see if your headphones are already running firmware 6F8 or 6A326. Then the update is already installed and you are on the safe side.
