In the case of Anthony Passeron’s book “The Sleepers”, one can reasonably ask whether the term “novel” is even appropriate. The boundaries of fiction have become blurred in the field of autofiction, the literary illumination of one’s own biography. Deliberately unreliable narrators rely on recognition and documentary verifiability, which is always possible in the age of digital archives. The “fictional” has become a mode of form, while the content is supposed to seem authentic. Traditional narrative forms of historiography are fitted into the narrow space of autobiography.
