Antarctica: Airbus A340 lands in eternal ice for the first time (video)

See in the video: Snow runway instead of tower – Airbus A340 lands in Antarctica for the first time.

An Airbus A 340 approaching a very special runway: Because the Wolf’s Fang Runway, WFR for short, is in the Antarctic. In the middle of the eternal ice, the machine had three kilometers to roll out. And flight captain Carlos Mirpuri is aware of the extraordinary moment: “This is the first time that an Airbus A340 has landed in Antarctica. That is history.” The passenger aircraft of the Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly flew from Cape Town in the direction of Antarctica for an unnamed client. The special thing about the five-hour flight was the lack of infrastructure at the landing site. Because instead of the usual runway, there was only snow and ice far and wide. And instead of the tower and air traffic controller, there was only one person with a satellite phone. But in the best weather everything went without any problems. According to Hi Fly, the plan is that a small number of tourists, scientists and various pieces of cargo will be flown to Antarctica this season.
