A photographer discovers a dead frogfish near the sail training ship “Gorch Fock”. A remarkable find, says Geomar biologist Thorsten Reusch.

A dead frogfish or monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) was found near the Kiel naval base.

“It is indeed remarkable,” said biologist Thorsten Reusch of the Kiel Geomar Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research of the German Press Agency. Frogfish would not normally be found in the Bay of Kiel. This fish lives, for example, in the North Sea.

According to a dpa photographer, the animal found in Kiel is about 80 centimeters tall. Anglerfish have a large mouth with sharp teeth. They lure their prey with a rod that is part of the dorsal fin.
