There were nuts and fruit as gifts: the female orangutan Kasih celebrated his 60th birthday in Gelsenkirchen Zoo.

The orangutan lady Kasih celebrated her 60th birthday on Saturday at the Gelsenkirchen Zoo leisurely and with a heap of colorful packages.

Kasih was visibly happy about the well-wishers and above all about the birthday presents. After all, the zoo team’s surprise for the elderly monkey grandma consisted mainly of treats such as grains, nuts and fruit. Everything was lovingly packed – this is intended to promote the motor skills of the sprightly female orangutan.

Still very fit for her age

“I think she enjoyed her birthday because there was a surprise and something different,” said Nataly Naeschke, spokeswoman for “Zoom Erlebniswelt”. Later, Kasih’s 12-year-old playmate Dodi was also allowed into the enclosure and also got some of Kasih’s birthday treats.

Despite her 60 years, Kasih is amazingly fit, according to the zoo. She takes part in the daily routine and likes to observe visitors and her fellow monkeys. Kasih also has such good teeth that she doesn’t need any extra food. Depending on its age, the oran-utan likes to spend the midday hours with a long nap.

Kasih was born on March 19, 1962 at Basel Zoo. In the wild, Sumatran orangutans have a life expectancy of about 40 years. According to the Gelsenkirchen Zoo, Kasih is one of the oldest orangutans born in zoos in Europe. According to Hamburg Tierpark Hagenbeck, only Bella, who lives there, is one year older. However, Bella’s age can only be estimated because she was born in the wild and not in the zoo like Kasih.
