Angela Merkel is currently enjoying her free time in Italy. After her visit to Florence, the former chancellor traveled on to Rome.

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (67) is currently on vacation in Italy. After her visit to Florence, she has now traveled to Rome, according to Italian media reports. Photos show the 67-year-old in casual clothing with a down jacket and handbag in the historic center of the Italian capital. Among other things, Merkel visited the Piazza della Minerva, as reported by the Italian news channel Sky TG24. The former chancellor was accompanied by civilian security personnel.

Angela Merkel announced a visit to Italy

Merkel last traveled to Rome in October 2021 – at that time still as Chancellor. “I will certainly be able to live my love for Italy in a completely different form,” she explained to the press at the time. “At least that’s what I hope when I’m no longer chancellor. But just one day’s stay in Rome tells me that you would actually have to spend more than a lifetime here to grasp everything that can be seen here in terms of world history. And in that respect I will certainly return to Italy, albeit in a different way.”

Angela Merkel’s current trip to Italy has been criticized because of the Ukraine war. Instead, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (44) invited the former Chancellor to visit Bucha. There she could “see what the policy of making concessions to Russia has led to in 14 years,” he said in a video message.
