“An Honorable Discharge” by Éric Vuillard – Culture

On page 105 of the book is the sentence: “Reading these telegrams gives you an uncomfortable feeling, you are confronted with a rather rare mixture of seriousness and confusion…” The telegrams mentioned are about messages that are sometimes contradictory , which the French Indochina Commander-in-Chief, General Henri Navarre, sent to Paris in May 1954. However, the sentence as a whole also applies to the book written by story and history inventor Éric Vuillard about the end of French colonial rule in Indochina – today’s countries of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. It’s a rather rare, albeit typical of Vuillard, mixture of seriousness and confusion.
