An essay about the decision-making power that police officers have

Police officers have their own discretion. What they are often unaware of: this can make them appear very threatening

Shortly before nine, I have to go to work, I’m late. I hit the gas, zooming through the city. Lightning! Damned. I look at the speedometer. I was traveling at about 60 km/h, the limit was 50. I turn off and the police wave me out. A small fine will probably be due, I think. 15 euros, maybe 25. These are the amounts in 2018, the year I was flashed. I was too fast, I’ll admit that immediately. I should get off. The police officer scowls down at me. “Have you ever smoked a joint?” he asks. I am amazed and have to laugh. Because I expected a lot of questions. But not with this one – on the way to work, in the middle of the week and then at this early in the morning!
