“An ecological aberration”… Elected environmentalists oppose the arrival of a circus on ice

He arrives “for the first time in Brittany after a triumphant tour throughout France”, proudly announces the leaflet. On the occasion of the February holidays, the Great Circus on Ice will set up its tent in the Parc de la Prévalaye in Rennes from February 10 to 26 with around fifty performances on the program.

“Inspired by the great American shows”, the show is not really to the taste of the elected environmentalists of the Breton capital. In a press release, they oppose the installation of the circus, denouncing “an ecological aberration. “In these times when local authorities and citizens are making significant efforts to reduce their energy consumption, it is totally incoherent to set up such a show, which requires putting ice on an ice rink under a marquee when it will be warmer 10°”, they are indignant.

The Rennes ice rink closed for four months this summer

In the majority, they also address a small sliding tackle to the Breton municipality which authorized the coming of the show. “This type of very energy-intensive installation goes completely against the objectives of energy sobriety and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions voted by Rennes Métropole”, they insist, believing that “the challenges of climate change call for a response urgent and radical, implying to question this type of event. »

Due to soaring energy prices, but also by ecological choice, the city of Rennes announced this fall that the Le Blizz ice rink would close its doors from May 28 to September 29, a period “when there is no more clubs and less activity,” argued first deputy Marc Hervé.

A decision not strong enough for the elected environmentalists who claim purely and simply the abandonment of ice sports. According to them, the ice rink must be converted “towards other sporting uses” such as “gliding sports on wheels. »
