The day of demonstrations of force. An American warship crossed the Turkish Straits on Friday to reach the Black Sea, amid tensions between Ukraine and Russia, the Turkish state agency Anadolu reported. The crossing of the Bosphorus, during which the US warship was accompanied by a team of Turkish coast guards, lasted nearly two hours, the agency said, which released photos and video of the destroyer during the trip. passage.

The United States had given up in mid-April to deploy two warships in the Black Sea, the day after a telephone interview between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin. The announcement of the finally canceled deployment came amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The decision to send warships had, then, been greeted as a sign of Washington’s support for Kiev.

During their meeting, the American president had in particular proposed to his Russian counterpart to meet in a third country and had asked him to “lower tensions” in Ukraine, according to the White House. They should very quickly discuss the situation since they are to meet Wednesday in Geneva.

Russia violates Danish airspace twice in one day

Russia did not wait for the upcoming meeting to make people talk about it. Indeed, the Danish government denounced the violation, also this Friday, of Danish airspace by two Russian planes and summoned the Russian ambassador about this incident described as worrying by Trine Bramsen, Danish Minister of Defense. According to the Ritzau agency, Trine Bramsen indicated that two fighter planes were sent to meet them to prevent this incursion.

Jeppe Kofod, Danish Foreign Minister commented on the incident on Twitter: “Completely unacceptable that Russian planes violate Danish airspace, twice in one day. According to him, the fact that this violation of Denmark’s airspace has occurred twice makes it appear to be a deliberate action. “We are still examining the details, but I have already taken the initiative to summon the Russian ambassador for an interview at the Foreign Ministry,” he added.

These incursions occurred over the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, south of Sweden. “It is very rare to see this type of violation of Danish airspace, so two on the same day should be considered of concern,” Defense Minister Trine Bramsen said.
