And? Who is Hanna now? That should be asked after the new Berlin Higher Education Act, which came into force in autumn and is causing a stir at universities all over Germany. Hanna was the name of a nice, animated doctoral student in a video from the Ministry of Education and Research. She explained to the real doctoral students and postdocs, i.e. those young scientists who had dared to take their first serious steps into the German research system, why their positions were almost always limited in time. According to Hanna, the reason is that innovation in Germany as a research location is only guaranteed if there is a certain amount of time at the universities. Her advice to everyone for whom fixed-term employment contracts are too uncertain: Simply plan your career in good time.
