When you discuss with literary publisher Jacques Testard how his tiny London-based indie publisher Fitzcarraldo Editions racked up three Nobel Prizes in just eight years, there comes a moment when he pulls a Siegfried Unseld book out of the closet. The book is in an invisible bookcase behind the laptop camera, it’s like he’s pulling it out from behind your ear. The longtime Suhrkamp publisher Siegfried Unseld said that Suhrkamp publishes “not books, but authors”, and in a certain sense the whole story is contained in this sentence.
