The Berlin Tiergarten District Court has dropped the case against Alexander Zverev in return for a fine. His ex-girlfriend had accused him of bodily harm.

The Berlin-Tiergarten District Court has dismissed the assault case against the German tennis professional Alexander Zverev’s case has been provisionally suspended. The background to the decision was an out-of-court settlement, the court announced on Friday. The 27-year-old Zverev was accused in the indictment of pushing his former girlfriend Brenda Patea against a wall and choking her with both hands during a heated argument in May 2020.

Alexander Zverev had lodged an appeal

The district court issued a penal order against Zverev in October 2023 and imposed a fine of 450,000 euros. Since Zverev subsequently appealed against the penal order, the case went to trial in the district court. His defense rejected the accusation in the proceedings that began on May 31. Zverev’s lawyer said at the time that it was based only on allegations, was not reliable and contradictory.

According to a court spokeswoman, Zverev must pay a fine of 200,000 euros in return for the proceedings being dropped. Of this, 150,000 euros will go to the state treasury and 50,000 to a fund for charitable organizations.

The decision was made at the request of the public prosecutor, and the defendant and Patea, who is participating in the proceedings as a co-plaintiff, agreed to the dismissal. The agreement to pay a fine does not constitute an admission of guilt. Zverev is still considered innocent. Both sides wanted to resolve the conflict peacefully, according to the court.
