Alcohol: One month abstinent – Insights from Dry January

A month without alcohol? Actually not a big deal. But once you try Dry January, you realize how normal alcohol is in our society – and we all depend on it. A field report.

“Alcohol is a paramedic in need” – Herbert Grönemeyer had already sung that. In January, the rescue service should have a break. Four weeks without beer or wine, no champagne or schnapps. 31 days abstinent – Dry January. It’s supposed to be healthy enough to avoid alcohol – completely and not just a little. Some call it detox, others take it for granted.

And I wanted to try it. A mixture of feeling bad about the gluttony between Christmas and New Year’s and also a bit to prove to myself that I can go a month without alcohol. And so much in advance: I made it. But it wasn’t easy.
