Albrecht Dürer’s rhinoceros – the secret of a famous work of art – Society

The rhinos are loose in Nuremberg. Since last July, the Germanic National Museum has been paying homage to the “miraculous rhinoceros”. At the center of the beautiful studio exhibition, which is based on a gift from Jim Monson, a collector of rhinoceros prints, and which can be seen for another two months, is Albrecht Dürer’s powerful woodcut “Rhinocerus” from 1515. For around 250 years, the work characterized the sheer untouchable authority of Dürer, the idea of the Europeans of the second largest land mammal in the world after the elephant. Then gradually a more realistic view of the animal began to prevail.
