AL Kennedy on Riot and Racism in England – Culture

Racists, hooligans, crazy elite students: And where is the England that we always loved, the England of great songs and stories? An answer.

By AL Kennedy

By the way, we British miss it too – this England. We miss this country with its humor, quiet bravery, thriving, multicultural cities, social mobility, rule of law, good health care and robust institutions. We miss the England that belonged to Great Britain, to the Allies – not fascist, without fear of facts, never on the run from reality. The Berlin Airlift, the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen and Berlin concentration camps, rock’n’roll, art, literature, the restoration of human rights in post-war Europe … we miss the English people who were able to do it all. We miss the people who legally enshrined equality, cooperation, education and justice in a country ravaged by war.
