The World War II bomb was found on the premises of a company in Hanover. Almost 3,300 residents had to leave their homes. According to the fire department, some of them refused to leave their homes.

The area was only cleared after 11:30 p.m. and the experts from the explosive ordnance disposal service could have gotten to work in the Brink-Hafen district, the Hanover fire department said on Twitter. Shortly before midnight it was said: “Good news: the detonator has been removed and must be deactivated with a small explosive charge”. Shortly after midnight, residents were finally allowed to return to their homes.

The 250-kilogram aircraft bomb of English origin was discovered early Thursday afternoon during exploratory work. Emergency accommodation was provided in the Herschel School for the affected residents.

Scheduled start of the evacuation

The evacuation began as scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Free Üstra buses were available to transport people to the assembly point and back to the apartments. Since people were unlikely to be able to return to their homes until late at night, the fire brigade asked them to take important medication, baby food and suitable clothing with them.

City service phone

Parts of Langenhagen were also in the evacuation radius, and according to the fire department, the busy Vahrenwalder Straße was completely closed. At the phone number (0800) 73 13 131 a service telephone was set up. The emergency services provide information on the Twitter profile on social media @Feuerwehr_H under the hashtag #hannbombe.
