Agriculture: Italy fears for its tomatoes – economy

The tomato has got unexpected competition. Not on the shopping list. But on the field. The seedlings of the coveted summer fruit are still sprout in the greenhouses before they are nursed into tender seedlings and planted outdoors at the end of April. It is there that the tomato is suddenly being contested for space by other cultures. Corn for example. The price per ton has skyrocketed to 400 euros. The grain currently brings the farmers four times more than the red pomo d’oro, the gold apple. A world is upside down: the sun-ripened tomato is the queen of Italian food culture. The corn is fed to the cattle. There is, as you can imagine, a lot going on in Italy.
