Agriculture – animal welfare label can come – economy

After years of discussions, a state animal husbandry logo for meat in supermarkets is to be launched. On Wednesday, the federal cabinet passed legislative plans by Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir that provide for mandatory labeling for domestic products. Now the way is clear for consumer protection to be strengthened, said the Greens politician in Berlin. “Consumers can see at a glance how the animal was kept.” The labeling is to start with five husbandry categories from the legal standard to organic in the coming year in a first step with pork. The ministry envisages a black and white, slightly rounded rectangle as a uniform logo. The word “animal husbandry” should be in a black border. A smaller rectangle filled with black should then show the exact form of keeping. The Bundesrat and Bundestag are now discussing the draft law further.
