After violent protests: Thousands of Italians demand a ban on right-wing extremists

After violent protests
Thousands of Italians are calling for right-wing extremists to be banned

The protests against the “green pass” in Italy have recently turned violent. Many Italians identify the far-right Forza Nuova party as a main driving force behind it. Therefore tens of thousands roam Rome demanding their ban. But it shouldn’t stop at protest.

Tens of thousands of Italians called for a ban on the right-wing extremist Forza Nuova (FN) party this Saturday. According to the organizers, around 200,000 demonstrators marched through the capital, Rome, with posters with inscriptions such as “Never again fascism”. A week ago, members of the FN attacked, among other things, the headquarters of the trade union federation CGIL after peaceful protests against the 3G obligation at work. The police arrested several members of the far-right party, including leading party officials.

Union secretary Maurizio Landini said at the rally on Saturday it was time to put a stop to “political violence”. “Neo-fascist groups must be banned immediately. But first we need an anti-fascist education in schools,” said the student Margherita Sardi.

The center-left Democratic Party, which is leading the call for an FN ban, said 100,000 people have already signed their petition.

In Italy, since Friday, all employees with the “green passport” have had to prove a corona vaccination, recovery or a negative test if they go about their work. Otherwise there is a risk of sanctions. Numerous people demonstrated against this last weekend. Some of the protests had degenerated into violence.
