The investigation into the school massacre in Uvalde continues. The police have been heavily criticized for their hesitant intervention – and are now taking action.

More than a month after the massacre at a Texas elementary school that killed 21, the school district’s police chief has resigned, according to media reports.

“I think this is the best decision for Uvalde,” quoted the local newspaper “Uvalde Leader News” Pete A. on Friday. The focus must now be on clarification – without “distraction”. The broadcaster ABC reported on Saturday that the resignation letter had been received by the city. According to the sender, the letter was available. The chief of police had previously been on leave.

An 18-year-old gunman shot dead 19 children and two teachers at a primary school in the small town of Uvalde at the end of May. The attacker shot the children and teachers in two connected classrooms with an assault rifle. Only about 75 minutes after the shooter opened fire, emergency services penetrated into the room and killed the perpetrator. The police were heavily criticized for their hesitant intervention.

Most recently, there had been loud criticism from the victims’ parents. They complain that the clarification is progressing only hesitantly and that important questions are not being answered. After the massacre, the authorities made contradictory statements about the incidents surrounding the police operation and corrected earlier statements several times.
