  • From June 17 on the occasion of the start of the wine festival, the monumental sculptures of the Chat de Geluck will be exhibited in the streets of Bordeaux.
  • They should already be installed in the previous edition, canceled due to the health crisis.
  • The 20 sculptures of two tonnes each will remain in the Gironde capital throughout the summer.

Purring in sight on the quays of Bordeaux. For the launch of the 2021 wine festival, on June 17, twenty monumental bronze sculptures representing the Cat invented by Belgian designer Philippe Geluck will be installed. The famous feline can be seen in different humorous positions for an exhibition called The cat walks. Installed since March 25 on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, they will be moved from June 9.

Le Chat is a series of press cartoons and comics created by Philippe Geluck in 1983 in a supplement to the Belgian newspaper The evening in which the feline distills short humorous sentences to meditate on. Twenty-one albums have been released since its inception.

Tour de France for Chat

“Large statues in the open air are about what we can offer this summer,” comments with philosophy Brigitte Bloch, president of the Bordeaux Métropole tourism and congress office. In view of the uncertain health context for this summer, outdoor exhibitions do indeed seem a safe option. “We had planned this exhibition for last year’s wine festival with Brussels as the host city, but of course we had to cancel,” she recalls. We wanted to maintain the same programming for this year. “

The sculptures, which weigh two tonnes each, will be installed in the city center, but the exact locations of their installation are still being studied. We will know more about the event on April 8, during the official presentation of the wine festival, organized from June 17 to 20 in a format adapted to the health crisis.

The monumental cats will then travel to Caen and around ten French and European cities. They will end their journey in Brussels with the inauguration of a Museum of the Cat and the drawing of humor.
