In 1926, while searching for an alternative to the hated republic, constitutional lawyer Carl Schmitt had to realize that the “epoch of the monarchy” would come to an end “when the sense of the principle of monarchy” was lost. A sovereign who has to justify himself before authorities other than God is not one. Therefore, their era had ended long before the November Revolution, when rulers began vying for public favor and budget approval with government programs. For Schmitt, a dictatorship in which the right people could execute their decisions unhindered was considered a contemporary form of government.
