The third division game between MSV Duisburg and VfL Osnabrück, which was canceled due to a racist insult, will be repeated. The DFB sports court followed a joint application by the two clubs.

The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Thursday. “The repetition of the game corresponds to the requests of the clubs involved. The DFB control committee had also spoken out in favor of a repetition of the game,” said the association. A catch-up date has not yet been set; a possible punishment for the MSV should be decided later.

The VfL Osnabrück footballer made his first public statement. He thanked him for the solidarity he had experienced. more

“The incident is a non-standardized special case, which, regardless of any fault of the clubs involved, justifies repeating the game in the opinion of the sports court,” said the deputy sports court chairman Stephan Oberholz.

“Emotionally and morally, we consider VfL Osnabrück’s decision not to continue the game to be understandable. The intention to set an example against racism also has our express support.”
Stephan Oberholz from the DFB

The Osnabrück player Aaron Opoku was was racially insulted by a Duisburg spectator last Sunday. As the first game in one of the three German professional leagues, the duel between the two traditional clubs was first interrupted and then canceled. The Duisburg police filed a complaint against a 55-year-old who admitted the insult. However, he meant another player.

“Hope that such an abandonment remains a one-off”

Both clubs welcomed the decision with a joint message. “With their behavior, both clubs have given a clear signal against racism and for humanity, the DFB has joined in with the judgment in the interests of football,” emphasized VfL President Holger Elixmann. “That is the decision that VfL and we wanted together,” said MSV President Ingo Wald. “Thanks also go to the DFB, who are responding appropriately to the circumstances of last Sunday. But we also hope that such an abandonment will be a one-off.”

“The events are a clear call to everyone to live humanity and tolerance.”
Duisburg President Ingo Wald

DFB decision should not set a precedent

However, the DFB does not want its decision to be understood as a precedent. It must “remain clear that the referee alone has the right to abandon the game,” said Oberholz. “We also expressly point out that in future, comparable cases of a game being abandoned, the intensity of the offense, the perpetrator profile, the time and the score must always be looked at more closely in relation to the game rating.”
