After gold theft in Manching: Bavaria wants to protect museums better – Bavaria

In response to the gold theft in Manching, the Bavarian state government is planning a special program to better protect museums. Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) submitted a catalog of measures to the cabinet. All state museums should review their own security concepts, including the connection to the critical infrastructure outside the building. For particularly valuable and movable objects, extra concepts are to be developed and copies made in individual cases. Non-governmental museums will receive additional funds from the Bavarian Culture Fund for the special program, it said.

Blume also suggests talking about tightening the penalties for serious cases of art theft. The minimum sentence of currently three months should be increased. In November, a unique Celtic pot of gold was stolen from the Celtic Museum in Manching, Upper Bavaria. According to the previous investigations, the perpetrators cut the fiber optic cable in a Telekom distribution center and thus interrupted the alarm transmission to a security company.
