Even more than 24 hours after a fire broke out in a listed building on Karolinenstrasse in Augsburg, firefighters were still busy extinguishing the fire on Saturday. There is still smoke and several embers, but no more big fire, said a fire department spokesman in the evening. “But if we stop extinguishing, there will be a fire.”
Stadtwerke Augsburg warned of contaminated drinking water in the vicinity of the fire site. In the course of the fire service, a small amount of extinguishing water got into the drinking water pipe. The fire broke out early Friday evening. According to the police, three residents suffered smoke inhalation but did not have to be hospitalized.
A fire department spokesman said the roof structure of the house should be lifted away on Saturday evening in order to better access the embers. The emergency services could no longer enter the building because the ceilings had collapsed on several floors. The house is in danger of collapsing, but not as bad as it was on Saturday night.
When lifting the roof, you want to be as careful as possible, said the fire department spokesman. The aim is to preserve the historical gable as well as possible so that it can at least be rebuilt later. According to the police, the cause of the fire was initially unclear. According to the fire department, the fire broke out in the attic and went down several floors. It even started to burn in the basement.
