If you wanted to escape the adversity of everyday British life this week, you had to go to Manchester. There, at the Tory party convention, a program was staged that had little to do with the reality in the country. A prime minister stood on the stage, hiding everything that worries his compatriots at the moment: no petrol at the petrol stations, massively rising gas bills and empty supermarket shelves.
