After arson attack on refugee tent: Suspect in custody – Bavaria

Almost a week after two arson attacks on a refugee tent in Lower Bavaria, the police arrested a suspect. The police said on Tuesday that an arrest warrant had been issued against the 57-year-old due to the risk of escaping and repeating the suspicion of attempted and intentional arson. Investigators did not provide any further details about the suspect.

On the night of February 1, fire was set for the first time in the still empty tent accommodation in Marklkofen (Dingolfing-Landau district), which was built for war refugees from the Ukraine. After the damage remained manageable, another arson attack took place the next night. The property damage amounts to several 1000 euros, people were not injured in either case.

The Bavarian central office for combating extremism and terrorism at the Munich public prosecutor’s office took over the case because of the alleged right-wing extremist attitude of the perpetrator. A 20-strong investigative team was set up at the Landshut Kripo to catch the arsonist.

“The attacks on the planned accommodation for displaced persons have significantly disturbed the sense of security,” said Lower Bavaria’s police chief Manfred Jahn, explaining the great effort. He was pleased that the alleged perpetrator had been found in such a short time. The rapid success of the investigation shows “that the perpetrators cannot feel safe in the supposed anonymity,” added Attorney General Reinhard Röttle. “We don’t tolerate such xenophobic attacks in Bavaria.”
