A few days ago, 28 criminals were deported from Germany to Afghanistan. There they were sent to prison – but not for long.

In According to a high-ranking Taliban official, the criminals deported from Germany are now free again in Afghanistan. The people were first checked, said Suhail Schahin, head of the Taliban political bureau in the Qatari capital Doha. “They were released after their families gave written assurances that they would not commit any crimes,” said the representative of the DPA news agency. Inquiries to the ministries in the Afghan capital Kabul have so far remained unanswered.

At the end of August, a deportation flight from Germany to Afghanistan took off for the first time since the Taliban seized power three years ago, on a plane operated by the Qatari airline Qatar Airways. The 28 deportees were convicted criminals who had no right to remain in Germany and whose deportation orders had been appealed. Union politicians called for more deportation flights.

Germany deports to Afghanistan

According to the news channel Al Jazeera, the Gulf emirate of Qatar mediated between the German government and the Taliban rulers for the deportation. Germany has no diplomatic relations with the Taliban in Kabul. So far, no country in the world has officially recognized the Islamist government. The group is internationally isolated, particularly because of its disregard for human rights and, above all, women’s rights. Qatar has already mediated between the West and the Taliban in the past.
