It is a question that for some life and death depends on the answer: When does the flights end? It is now being put up everywhere, in Kabul, Berlin, London, Paris, since the virtual meeting of the G7, when US President Joe Biden told the other heads of state and government that next Tuesday would really be over. The last US plane is scheduled to take off from Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 31, and the unprecedented rescue operation for tens of thousands of people will be over – no matter how many remain at the airport and hope. Western foreigners, their local helpers, the local staff or Afghans who, for example, have campaigned for the interests of women, for human rights. They must all fear falling victim to reprisals by the militant Islamist Taliban.
