The Afghanistan mission began with the misconception that troops from afar could pacify the country permanently. And it ends as “Mission Impossible” with Americans doubly humiliated by the Taliban and terrorists.

A comment by Stefan Niemann, NDR

An end with horror. Doubly humiliated by the Taliban and terrorists, US troops soon withdraw. Even if US President Joe Biden swears that the masterminds of the attack will be hunted down mercilessly, all US citizens and others in need of protection will somehow be rescued from Afghanistan – for most Americans it feels like a surrender: militarily and morally. The inglorious withdrawal after a long war, which from my point of view has always been a “Mission Impossible”.

Troops from abroad should pacify Afghanistan

After the terror trauma of September 11, both George W. Bush and Barack Obama held fast to the mistaken belief that troops from abroad could pacify Afghanistan permanently in addition to their fight against terrorism and despite the civilian casualties. The “good Americans” were supposed to transform the country in the Hindu Kush, which is marked by tribal feuds and ethnic conflicts, into a haven of democracy.

The US secret services did not go unnoticed how billions of dollars seeped away in the dark channels of the corrupt Kabul government. How Afghanistan’s leadership gambled away the people’s trust, how the Taliban once again gained considerable influence. Nevertheless, ex-President Donald Trump had solemnly announced America’s withdrawal, with the majority of the war-weary population behind them. That was a fatal mistake, because Trump had trusted the Taliban almost unconditionally. So they were able to prepare for their takeover for months.

But Biden was responsible for the chaotic deduction, the negligently late rescue operation for tens of thousands who are now worried for life and limb. It should go down in history as a disgrace for America and the Allies – the war in Afghanistan, which made many losses.
