There has apparently been another knife attack in Mannheim. According to the German Press Agency, an AfD local election candidate was attacked. According to AfD reports, the man suffered cuts.
According to the news agency dpa, an AfD candidate for the local elections in Mannheim was attacked with a knife late on Tuesday evening. The man was injured. The perpetrator was arrested. The crime occurred at 10:45 p.m. The Mannheim police officially confirmed this morning only that there was a police operation. They will provide information later in the day.
Candidate suffered Cuts
According to the AfD regional association, the injured politician’s cuts were stitched up in the hospital. According to information from the local council group, he was hit in the ear and stomach. Jörg Finkler from the AfD group in the Mannheim local council said that he himself was with the injured candidate in the hospital until the early hours of the morning, together with his wife. He is friends with the victim, both of whom are candidates for the local council. A police patrol caught the suspect in no time because they were nearby and a citizen called 110. The injured candidate will probably leave the hospital at midday.
Two people are said to have fled
According to the AfD district association, the attack took place near the market square. The AfD candidate had caught a poster tearer red-handed. When he confronted the person, he was attacked and injured with a knife. According to the AfD, a total of three people were involved, two of whom managed to escape.
AfD cites video as evidence
In a video that was passed on to the dpa by the AfD and which was apparently filmed by the injured AfD candidate himself, the filmmaker can be seen running after a younger man across the market square and shouting “Stop! Stop!”.
The younger man is carrying several AfD election posters under his arm and is presumably holding a carpet knife. “Lie down immediately!” shouts the person filming. A scuffle then ensues. You can see the man swinging the knife, the rest of the images are blurry.
AfD suspects Left-wing extremists as perpetrators
The AfD spoke of an attack by left-wing extremists. “We are shocked and dismayed,” said AfD state chairman Markus Frohnmaier.
