According to information from the network operator, the cell phone network on Germany’s railway lines has improved. Telekom announced that the LTE (4G) radio standard with transmission of 200 megabits per second would be available on 97 percent of the main traffic routes. A state obligation that will come into force at the beginning of 2023 to enable 100 megabits per second everywhere on the ICE routes and other connections with a large number of passengers has already been significantly exceeded. In tunnels, nature reserves and other areas, the connection can still be very poor due to a lack of expansion options. As part of a cooperation with the railways that began two years ago, around 300 new mobile phone masts were built and 700 existing locations were modernized or expanded. Deutsche Bahn board member Daniela Gerd tom Markotten rated the pace of mobile phone network expansion as “tailwind for the traffic turnaround”. According to their own statements, the competitors Telefónica (O2) and Vodafone are also making progress.
