ADAC also wants eCall for motorcycles – cars & mobiles

In order to ensure rapid rescue in the event of motorcycle accidents, the ADAC demands that the automatic emergency call system eCall (stands for “emergency call”) also be introduced for motorcycles. Newly type-approved cars have had to have the emergency call system, which automatically activates the rescue chain after an accident, on board for a number of years. Accidents involving motorcyclists traveling alone, on the other hand, often go undetected because the routes are rarely used by other road users or the accident cannot be seen from the road, argues the automobile club. That is why the ADAC advocates making the emergency call system legally mandatory for all new vehicles.

Research by the ADAC regarding common systems on the market had shown that vehicle-integrated eCall systems that use sensors on the motorcycle are the easiest and most reliable to work. In the case of retrofit systems, the range extends from devices that have to be installed on the motorcycle and in some cases connected to a smartphone, to pure smartphone apps that work independently of the motorcycle. Here it is important to compare the respective system with the personal usage profile, explained the club.
