Actor Antoine Reinartz feels ‘at home’ despite competitive pressure

Antoine Reinartz is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival where he feels, according to his words, “like at home”. He made a remarkable debut in 120 beats per minute by Robin Campillo, which won him a César in 2018 and then returned often. This year it is in Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet, presented competition, that he is back.

“The first time I came to Cannes was to 120 beats per minute in 2017. I had had an accident the day before and I was so full of cortisone that I lived everything in cotton, he tells 20 minutes. I was in so much pain that I threw up after the screening and had to be escorted out. It wasn’t very glamorous. This painful memory is far away for the actor who has since escorted Alice and the Mayor by Nicolas Pariser Roubaix city of light by Arnaud Desplechin and Small type by Samuel Theis on the Croisette. He now knows how to run the festival.

The biggest festival in the world

“I asked to see Anatomy of a fall before Cannes, he says. It’s an intense film that I wouldn’t have liked to see on the big screen during the official session,” he admits. He did well to take his precautions, because this trial film signed by the director of Victoria and of Sybil does not spare the viewer. He embodies a prosecutor apparently smooth, but determined to condemn the heroine (played by Sandra Huller) whom he considers responsible for the death of her husband.

“He is a character who wants to make his truth heard and who spares no effort to counter the defense lawyer played by Swann Arlaud, says Antoine Reinartz. He tries to convince the jurors and his work is ultimately not very far from that of an actor trying to seduce his audience. To better embody this manipulative magistrate, the actor shaved his head, which makes him as fascinating as it is threatening. “The dress I wore made me feel like a disguise, like I was at the theatre,” he recalls.

If this second role, in which he is brilliant, will probably not allow him to win a prize, Antoine Reinartz does not feel the slightest bitterness. “I had heard that Cannes was losing momentum,” he says. So I tried the Venice Film Festival, but Cannes is much better. It is the biggest festival in the world. “Sure that we will see Antoine Reinartz there again: they are made for each other.
