On Wednesday morning, a pungent smell came from a youth hostel in Munich’s Isarvorstadt district. Batteries for an emergency power supply had caught fire. But the fire alarm system had alerted the fire department early on.
After the evacuation alarm in the dormitory was triggered, all people present left the building, according to the professional fire department. The emergency services found a very hot emergency power supply system in the basement of the building. According to the fire department, two of the batteries were damaged and were emitting steam.
Since switching off the system did not improve the situation, the emergency services removed the batteries while wearing breathing apparatus and took them outside. After using a high-performance fan, the young people and their carers were able to return to the building.
