As of: 12/22/2021 8:15 a.m.

The German film “Ich bin dein Mensch” cleared an important hurdle at the Oscars. It is one of the 15 films on the shortlist. Star composer Hans Zimmer has two opportunities.

The tragic comedy “Ich bin dein Mensch” by the German director Maria Schrader was shortlisted in the race for the Oscar for the best foreign film. The 15 films on the so-called shortlist also include the film “Große Freiheit” by Austrian director Sebastian Meiser and the drama “A Hero” by the two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi from Iran. One of the strong contenders is the Danish film “Flee”, which depicts the dangerous journey of a gay Afghan refugee to Europe. The Academy Award nominees were selected from 92 nominations from around the world by members of the Film Academy.

Lola for the best feature film

In “Ich bin dein Mensch”, Maren Eggert plays a scientist who is supposed to test a humanoid robot as a partner. The film was selected for the Oscar race in mid-September by German Films, the foreign representation of German film. It was also already a big winner at this year’s German Film Award. Overall, the film was awarded four Lolas, including best feature film in gold.

2007: Oscar for “The Lives of Others”

There was no German candidate in the previous Oscar race. The film “And tomorrow the whole world” by director Julia von Heinz was eliminated in the preliminary round. In the end, the Danish social satire “Der Rausch” by director Thomas Vinterberg won the Oscar for best foreign film. Most recently, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck won the Oscar for Germany in 2007 for his directorial debut “The Lives of Others”.

Double chance for Hans Zimmer

Star composer Hans Zimmer has two chances this time: the native of Frankfurt made it onto a shortlist of 15 candidates with his compositions for the science fiction drama “Dune” and for the James Bond film “No Time to Die”.

Zimmer last made it into the Oscar finals in 2018 – he owed his eleventh nomination to the score for Christopher Nolan’s war drama “Dunkirk”. In 1995 Zimmer received the Oscar for “The Lion King”.

Awarded in March 2022

Special effects maker Gerd Nefzer and a graduate of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy also got a little closer to the Oscar. Nefzer was responsible for the visually stunning scenes in “Dune”. After the preselection, the film is one of ten candidates for a special effects Oscar. Born in Swabia, Nefzer won one of the coveted trophies for “Blade Runner 2049” in 2018.

The Jordanian director Murad Abu Eisheh, a graduate of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, can hope for an Oscar in the “Live Action Short Film” category. His half-hour film “Tala’vision” tells about the life of eight-year-old Tala in war-torn Syria and the importance of a television set for girls. Eisheh had already been awarded a student Oscar in October.

Now the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will vote again before the final list of the five Oscar nominations in the respective categories is announced on February 8th. The prizes themselves will be presented on March 27th.
