The transfer carousel is also in full swing during the European Championship. The biggest move: French star Kylian Mbappé is leaving Paris Saint-Germain and will play for Champions League winners Real Madrid from next season. But it will not be the only top transfer of the summer.
Important for all Bundesliga fans: German clubs can sign new players until September 2, 2024.
Is a high-profile departure looming at Borussia Dortmund? As Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio reports, AC Milan is interested in BVB striker Niclas Füllkrug.
According to reports, the “Rossoneri”, who want to strengthen their attack for the coming season, also speculated that Füllkrug could imagine a move due to Dortmund’s upcoming signing of Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy. According to di Marzio, there has already been initial contact with the German international.
Füllkug scored 16 goals in competitive matches for Dortmund last season and also scored twice for the German national team at the European Championships on home soil. The 31-year-old’s current contract with the Black and Yellows runs until 2026.
Former French national coach Laurent Blanc will be the new coach at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. The 1998 world champion will face fellow countrymen Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté, among others, at the 2023 champions. Blanc, who was sacked at Olympique Lyon in September 2023 after just eleven months, replaces Argentinian Marcelo Gallardo, who was fired in July.
Blanc had already coached Al-Rayyan SC from Qatar from 2020 to 2022. He had won the French championship title four times with Girondins Bordeaux (1) and Paris St. Germain (3). As a player, he was world champion in 1998 and made 97 international appearances for “Les Bleus”. The libero is considered one of the best players in French football history.
Heiko Westermann will be working with former national coach Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona. As the German Football Association (DFB) announced, the 40-year-old former international player is now joining the Catalans as Flick’s assistant. There had already been corresponding media reports about the previous assistant coach of the German U19 juniors.
Westermann has been working for the DFB since summer 2019, where he has coached various age groups. During his playing career, the defender played 27 international matches – under the then assistant coach Flick.
In the Bundesliga, Westermann played for Hamburger SV and FC Schalke 04, among others. He also knows the Spanish league from his time at Betis Sevilla.
The 57-year-old was already involved with the foundation during his time as Liverpool coach, including through public lectures and visits to charity events. This work is now to be continued.
“His role as Honorary Ambassador will ensure that his connection with the LFC Foundation continues into the future,” said a club statement. Klopp once even called the LFC Foundation “the best department in the club.”
Although the medical check for Serhou Guirassy’s transfer to Borussia Dortmund has been delayed, VfB Stuttgart apparently still expects the striker to leave. Now, according to a report in “Bild”, the signing of a successor has been finalized. However, the deal is said to be independent of a possible Guirassy transfer.
