Abandoned Places: Lost Places to Creep in Southern Europe

The enchanted places have their own special charm: abandoned places that are no longer in any travel guide. For years they have been left to their own devices and left to decay.

The Lost Places give visitors the feeling of capturing a story in this moment that could soon be forgotten forever. Two authors searched for such places in southern Europe with their cameras and found adventurous places in the Alps-Adriatic region, which they describe in their book “Decayed & Forgotten – Lost Places in the Alps-Adriatic Region” present, which was published by Styria Verlag.

For the project, they visited old industrial plants, hotels, castles, ships and war relics in Carinthia, Friuli, Slovenia and Croatia. Fortunately, during their research they also came across associations and private individuals who take care of the relics of yesteryear and try to “breathe new life” into the abandoned places, as they write in their foreword.

But the greatest enemy is not the ravages of time, but people. “We mean the destructive with their criminal energy as well as the idlers among investors, speculators, authorities and politicians.”

On the following pages of the photo series we present three eerily beautiful places.
